Postdoctoral Research Fellowship in Biomedical Nonlinear Optics for Imaging and Femtosecond Laser Surgery
The Femtosecond Laser Assisted Biophotonics Laboratory at the University of Texas at Austin seeks postdoctoral researchers to join its interdisciplinary team. Interested candidates will join a team of researchers working to advance ultrafast laser surgery and nonlinear imaging technologies.
1) The surgery project involves developing a miniaturized femtosecond laser surgery system for treatment of scarred vocal folds using Kagome fibers, specialized scanning systems (piezo- and MEMS-based), and custom developed miniaturized optics. Additional applications of the surgical technologies we are developing target spine surgery and cancer treatment.
2) The imaging projects include development of clinical nonlinear imaging endoscopes and high-speed nonlinear microscopy (LEAD microscopy, Nature Communications 9, 4499, 2018) for brain calcium imaging.
Successful candidates for these positions will have a strong background in optical instrumentation and ideally be well-versed in laser-tissue interactions and/or endoscopic system design.
Preferred Qualifications:
- A PhD in physics, electrical, mechanical, and biomedical engineering, or related disciplines
- Extensive experience working with optical components and optical laboratory equipment (linear/non-linear microscopes, optical fibers, PMTs etc.)
- Expertise in programming and development of routines for instrument control, data acquisition, and processing with LabVIEW and Matlab
- Proficiency with optical modeling software (e.g. ZEMAX)
- English fluency and good writing skills
- A strong work ethic and desire to perform world-class research, author journal articles, present
research at scientific conferences, and improve public health
