Postdoctoral Research Fellowship in Biomedical Photoacoustic Imaging and Microscopy at FDA

Postdoctoral Research Fellowship in Biomedical Photoacoustic Imaging and Microscopy
The Optical Diagnostic Devices Laboratory at the U.S. Food and Drug Administration's Center for Devices
and Radiological Health performs regulatory science research to facilitate the clinical translation of safe and
effective medical technologies. We are currently inviting applications for a Postdoctoral Research Fellowship
through the Oak Ridge Institute of Science and Engineering. The position is located at the White Oak Federal
Research Center in Silver Spring, Maryland near Washington, DC.

The Fellow will perform research on photoacoustic imaging and photoacoustic microscopy for sensing tissue
vasculature, oximetry, blood flow, and exogenous contrast agents such as nanoparticles. This work will
involve use of existing photoacoustic imaging, photoacoustic microscopy, and optical coherence
tomography systems to perform development and validation of phantom-based test methods, as well as to
conduct in vivo animal imaging studies. Additional tasks may include contributing to ongoing projects on
optical sensing techniques such as near-infrared fluorescence and OCT imaging.

An ideal candidate will have:
- Prior research experience in light-tissue interactions, pulsed lasers, plasmonic nanoparticles,
photoacoustics, microscopy, and spectroscopy
- An academic background that includes coursework in biophotonics, medical imaging, physiology,
biology, electronics and computer programming
- Expertise with lasers and optical detection and imaging systems
- Expertise in programming and development of routines for instrument control, data acquisition and
processing with LabVIEW and Matlab
- Experience with in vivo optical imaging and small animal research
- Excellent communication skills and the ability to work in our highly collaborative team environment
- A strong work ethic and desire to perform world-class research, author journal articles, present
research at scientific conferences and improve public health

The position is full-time for one year with extensions dependent on Fellow performance and available
funding. Salary is highly competitive; however, this is a temporary, contract fellowship, not a federal
employee position. Citizenship/green card is not required, but applicants must have resided in the US for 3
of the past 5 years.
