An opening is available for a research fellow in Dr. Stefan Carp’s group within the Optics at Martinos Laboratories (optics.martinos.org), located at the Massachusetts General Hospital Martinos Center for Biomedical Imaging, a teaching affiliate of Harvard Medical School. This is an exciting opportunity to work with and advance cutting edge tools for optical tissue characterization. The project also contains a strong translational component where the fellow will participate in human subject validation studies as well as in clinical studies of brain health monitoring on patients undergoing cardiovascular surgery. The Martinos Center offers an excellent training environment and resources for career advancement, as well as a wealth of institutional expertise in all areas of medical imaging.
The fellow will specifically work with near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) and diffuse correlation spectroscopy (DCS) techniques, including instrumentation development, modeling advances and validation and clinical studies in the context of neuromonitoring. The ideal applicant would have a strong technical background, preferably with prior experience in biomedical optics, and an interest in the practical applications of optical imaging as well as the ability to handle both theoretical and experimental aspects of optical measurements. There will be opportunities to participate in study design, to assist in the development of human (IRB) and animal (IACUC) protocols, and to participate in grant preparation and editing.
Requirements: PhD in biomedical engineering, electrical engineering, physics or equivalent, preferably with prior optics experience. Programming skills in C/C++, Matlab or Python are essential and prior experience with optical data analysis is a plus. The job requires a candidate who is mature, responsible, flexible, with excellent attention to detail, organizational and people skills. S/He must be able to work in a fast-paced environment, and should be able to problem-solve/troubleshoot, juggle and prioritize multiple tasks, and seek assistance when appropriate.
