Dear Colleagues,

We are pleased to announce our 5th Annual Short Course on Computational Biophotonics (SCCB) to be held at UC Irvine on 24-28 July 2017 (flyer attached). This short course builds upon the success of four annual short courses that we have held since 2012 as well as three successful Virtual Photonics Workshops held in 2009, 2010, and 2011. SCCB 2017 is made possible through support from the National Institute of General Medical Sciences (NIGMS).

The weeklong short course format features lectures on computational modeling, biomedical applications, technology demonstrations and hands-on training using our unique open-source GUI-based Virtual Tissue Simulator software platform. Each day of the short course will be dedicated to a single biomedical theme that is linked to a relevant computational modeling unit. Morning sessions are devoted to lectures on both computational modeling and the biomedical context. Afternoon sessions will be devoted to technology demonstrations, problem-based learning computational laboratories, and interactive presentations and discussions of laboratory findings. The five daily themes are (a) Tissue Properties & Biological Microscopy; (b) Monte Carlo Simulations of Radiative Transport;
(c) Optical Dosimetry; (d) Wide-Field Imaging; and (e) Diffuse Optics.
Where feasible, afternoon labs will incorporate hands-on experiments, enabling participants to gain experience in acquiring optical data and analyzing it using the tools provided in the Short Course. Ample social time will be available during the lunch hours and organized dinners.

We would welcome nominations from you for graduate and/or post-doctoral students who are either relatively new to Biophotonics or that you feel would benefit from attending this Short Course. Enrollment will be limited to facilitate active engagement and participation from all the attendees.
The registration fee for students and post-docs is $800 w/o lodging or
$1300 including lodging (double occupancy with another short course attendee). Participation by university faculty and non-academic participants is also welcome. The registration fees for faculty or industrial participants (w/o lodging) will be $2000. In the past as many as 1/3 of the total number of attendees comprised university faculty and industrial scientist/engineers.

Financial support from the NIH allows us to offer competitive partial or full scholarships to some student and post-doctoral attendees who are US citizens or permanent residents. To apply for registration and/or financial support, we ask faculty/research supervisors to submit a complete application package on behalf of your nominee that includes (1) a recommendation letter in support of your student or post-doctoral nominee,
(2) the nominee's cv, and (3) a statement of purpose written by the nominee that outlines their educational background, research interests, and rationale behind their desire to attend SCCB 2017. Faculty and industrial applicants should submit a (1) statement of interest and (2) resume/cv. We would appreciate receiving complete application packages no later than Monday, June 19, 2017.

If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to contact us. Please disseminate this announcement and attached flyer broadly. We look forward to hearing from you.

Best Regards,

Vasan Venugopalan and Jerry Spanier
