Research Fellowship in Biomedical Photoacoustic Imaging

 

The Optical Diagnostic Devices Laboratory at the U.S. Food and Drug Administration's Center for Devices and Radiological Health performs regulatory science research to facilitate the clinical translation of safe and effective medical technologies.  We are currently inviting applications for a Research Fellowship through the Oak Ridge Institute of Science and Engineering.  The position is located at the new White Oak Federal Research Center in Silver Spring, Maryland near Washington, DC.

 

The Fellow will perform research on near-infrared photoacoustic imaging for tissue oximetry and detection of exogenous chromophores, including nanoparticles.  This work will involve use of an existing multi-spectral photoacoustic imaging system to perform small animal imaging, including near-infrared fluorescence imaging, as well as development and validation of phantom-based test methods. Additional tasks may include contributing to ongoing projects on optical sensing and oximetry techniques such as near-infrared spectroscopy and near-infrared fluorescence imaging.

The Fellow will have the opportunity to perform cutting-edge scientific research with highly experienced biophotonics researchers, present work at scientific conferences and publish journal articles, while also gaining insight into the medical device regulatory process.

 

Candidates with the following background are encouraged to apply:

-          Ph.D in an engineering discipline

-          Experience with in vivo optical imaging, small animal research, and cell culture

-          Experience with xenograft tumor models

-          Experience with nanoparticles for optical cancer detection

-          Prior research experience in photoacoustics, light-tissue interactions, pulsed lasers, plasmonic nanoparticles, or optical spectroscopy

-          An academic background that includes coursework in biophotonics, medical imaging, physiology, biology, electronics and computer programming

-          Excellent communication skills and the ability to work in our highly collaborative team environment.

-          A strong work ethic and desire to perform world-class research, author journal articles, present research at scientific conferences and improve public health

 

The position is full-time for one year with extensions dependent on Fellow performance and available funding.  Salary will be based on academic degrees earned and experience; however, this is a temporary, contract fellowship, not a federal employee position.  U.S. citizenship is not required for participation in the ORISE Research Participation Programs at FDA. If a candidate does not have a current status that permits participation, we may be able to sponsor him/her in the Exchange Visitor (J-1) Program (research scholar and short-term scholar categories only). Students and recent graduates with an F-1 status may also be eligible for participation.
