US FDA, Postdoctoral Fellowship on Pulsed-Laser Damage in Tissue Containing Nanoparticles

Postdoctoral Fellowship on Pulsed-Laser Damage in Tissue Containing Nanoparticles

The Division of Biomedical Physics in the U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s Center for Devices and Radiological Health performs regulatory science research to facilitate the clinical translation of safe and effective medical technologies. We are currently inviting applications for a Postdoctoral Research Fellowship through the Oak Ridge Institute of Science and Engineering. The position is located at the new White Oak Federal Research Center in Silver Spring, Maryland near Washington, DC.

The Fellow will perform benchtop research on photothermal and photomechanical damage relevant to diagnostic and therapeutic device safety and performance. This work will involve development and implementation of a system for high-speed visualization and thermal/acoustic measurements of the ablation process, as well as characterization of damage thresholds and elucidation of factors that influence this process.

The optimal candidate will have:

- Experience in therapeutic techniques based on pulsed laser-tissue ablation, photothermal safety of pulsed laser diagnostics, and plasmonic nanoparticles, including the ability to establish experimental setups involving pulsed (nanosecond-to-femtosecond) lasers, detection and imaging systems, and computer-interfaces.

- Expertise and computer programming, Matlab and LabVIEW

- Experience in optics and high power pulsed lasers

- Experience in biophotonics and medical-related topics such as biology and physiology

- Excellent communication skills and the ability to work in our highly collaborative team environment

The position is full-time for one year with a second year of funding dependent on Fellow performance. Annual salary is highly competitive. This is a term fellowship, not a federal employee position. Please send a CV and contact information for two references to Dr. Joshua Pfefer (joshua.pfefer@fda.hhs.gov) and Dr. Ilko Ilev (ilko.ilev@fda.hhs.gov).
