Research Fellow Position in Photoacoustic Imaging

We are currently seeking highly motivated candidates for a Postgraduate (PhD or MS) Research Fellow position in the Optical Diagnostic Devices Laboratory at the U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s Center for Devices and Radiological Health (CDRH).  This position will involve development of a portable photoacoustic imaging system and implementation of this system in biomarker and phantom-based test method studies. Measurements of biological tissues and plasmonic nanoparticle contrast agents will also be performed.  Candidates with experience in the following areas are encouraged to apply:  biophotonics, photoacoustics, spectroscopy, ultrasound, lasers, image processing and Matlab-based instrument control and data acquisition/processing.

The Optical Diagnostic Devices lab performs regulatory science research on biophotonic technologies for disease detection and physiological monitoring, with a focus on in vivo devices.  Our research ranges from basic studies of light-tissue interactions and optical damage processes to assessment of device performance for applications such as cancer detection, ophthalmic imaging and glucose sensing.  Our extensive capabilities in optics include instruments for optical coherence tomography, UV/Vis/near-IR spectroscopy, hyperspectral imaging, spectrophotometry, spectrofluorometry, microscopy and endoscopic imaging.  The lab also has a biochemistry laboratory and phantom fabrication resources.  The lab also shares use of CDRH-wide resources for animal research and supercomputing.

The position – a one-year ORISE fellowship with potential for extension – provides a competitive salary based on degree level as well as opportunities for journal publication and presentations at scientific conferences.  CDRH is located at the new White Oak Federal Research Center in Silver Spring, Maryland near Washington, DC.

To apply, please send a CV and cover letter to Dr. Joshua Pfefer (joshua.pfefer@fda.hhs.gov).
