Seeking Applications; Arizona BME Department Head
Department Head, Department of Biomedical Engineering (BME),
College of Engineering, University of Arizona
The Department of Biomedical Engineering at the University of Arizona seeks qualified candidates who
bring the experience, leadership skills, and vision necessary to lead a department of high excellence.
We seek candidates with a deep commitment to academic distinction, who will enhance the
department's ability to recruit and retain high‐quality faculty and students while facilitating large,
innovative, multidisciplinary projects.
The department offers undergraduate degrees in biomedical engineering, and BME faculty are key
members in a long standing multidisciplinary multi‐college graduate program in biomedical
engineering. The department receives strong support from industrial and government partners and
leads or participates in several NIH‐, NSF‐ and industry‐supported research and training centers.
Current areas of research excellence include biomedical imaging, biomaterials, tissue engineering,
nanomedicine and bioinstrumentation. BME has close ties with the College of Medicine in translational
research and the University of Arizona is making a strategic investment to expand biomedical
engineering and translational sciences, including new research buildings. Currently, there are 11 tenure
track faculty with a goal to significantly increase faculty size to meet the increasing mission for training
and research in biomedical engineering.
The Department Head has responsibility for the academic and research programs of BME, including all
administrative, budgetary and personnel decisions, and oversees external affairs, including community
outreach, and industry and alumni relations. Candidates for the position of Department Head must
have earned a doctoral degree and have international recognition in his/her specific discipline(s),
including a record of excellence in academic and professional achievements. Experience in working in
an interdisciplinary engineering/medical environment is critical.
