Research Fellow Position in Biomedical Optics
The Division of Physics in the US Food and Drug Administration’s Center for Devices and Radiological Health performs cutting-edge regulatory science research on novel medical technologies, including those based on biophotonics.
We are currently inviting applications for a postdoctoral (or post-MS) research fellowship through the Oak Ridge Institute of Science and Engineering fellowship program. The position is located at the White Oak Federal Research Center in Silver Spring, Maryland (near Washington, DC).
The candidate will be involved in all or some of three photoacoustic projects:
- Photoacoustic spectroscopy using a tunable pulse laser system for trace gas detection in human breath
- Establishing a photoacoustic microscopy system using a high-repetition rate tunable dye laser, and collecting data for imaging micro-vasculature
- Development of phantom-based test methods for quantitative assessment of photoacoustic tomography system performance
The optimal candidate will have:
- Experience in photoacoustics research, including the ability to establish photoacoustic spectroscopy and photoacoustic microscopy experimental setups (i.e., arrange lasers and detectors, prepare computer-interfaces)
- Expertise in optics and computer programming, Matlab and LabVIEW
- Experience in safe operation of high power pulse lasers
- Excellent communication skills and the ability to work in our highly collaborative team environment
The position is full-time for two years with possible extension to a third year depending on the candidate’s qualification and available funding. The annual salary will be highly competitive. Applications are invited for an immediate opening.
