Assistant professor vacancy, Biophotonics, University of Twente

UNIVERSITEIT TWENTE.

VACANCY

The Biomedical Photonic Imaging chair (www.utwente.nl/bmpi) of the University of Twente (Enschede, the Netherlands) looks for a candidate for the position of

Assistant professor (tenure track, 1.0fte)

Profile

The candidate should have a PhD degree preferably with postdoctoral experience in the research area of biomedical photonics, using the approach of applied physics, applied mathematics, biomedical engineering or any other engineering discipline relevant in the development of noninvasive diagnostics and imaging methods using light and sound. Qualification for this position should be proven by a good publication track record in peer reviewed journals of high impact.

Activities

You are expected to develop and acquire funding for your own line of research within the area of biomedical photonics. This may include but is not limited to photoacoustics, acousto-optics, speckle-based optical technologies, and optical interactions with targeted contrast agents and targeted therapeutic agents. Also candidates with research plans outside the above topics but within the area of biomedical photonic imaging for clinical application are invited.

You will contribute to the education in our bachelor and master curricula such as biomedical engineering, technical medicine and applied physics.

Appointment and salary

You will be appointed in a Tenure Track position [in accordance with Clause 6.5a of the Collective Labour Agreement - Dutch Universities] by the Faculty of Science and Technology. A Tenure Track contract enables you to direct your own career based on fixed performance agreements, in which context promotion from UD (assistant professor) to UHD (associate professor) and subsequently to professor is possible. A definitive assessment will take place no later than five years after commencement of employment after which, following a positive review, employment for an indefinite period will be granted.

Information and application

For information please contact prof.dr. W. Steenbergen, MIRA Institute of Biomedical Technology and Technical Medicine, Biomedical Photonic Imaging chair (tel. + 31 53 4893160,w.steenbergen@utwente.nl ).

The Biomedical Photonic Imaging chair (www.utwente.nl/bmpi)

The Biomedical Photonic Imaging group of the University of Twente investigates the use of light for medical purposes. Our final aim is to develop optical and hybrid optical-acoustical technologies for medical diagnosis, in particular in the fields of oncology and wound healing. Our current technologies include photoacoustics, acousto-optics, and coherent optical methods. Physiological properties of primary interest to us are microcirculatory blood flow, hemoglobin concentrations, and blood oxygenation. Furthermore we focus on the quantified detection and imaging of functionalized contrast agents such as gold nanoparticles, and optically labeled targeted drugs. Our approaches include research into the physics of light-tissue interaction and its measurement, biomedical engineering to realize suitable instrumentation for in vivo use, clinical evaluation together with several medical partners. Furthermore we put strong emphasis on valorization/commercialization of our technologies.
