Postdoctoral Scholar; Photonics Technology Initiative (VPTI) at the University of California, Irvine

Postdoctoral Scholar

SALARY:      $37,068-$40,584 annually

Starting Date:       15 November 2009 or until post is filled
Posting Date:        12 October 2009

Applications are invited for a Post-Doctoral position, at 100% time for 12 months, within the Virtual Photonics Technology Initiative (VPTI) at the University of California, Irvine. We seek scholars with a strong record of productive activity in computational biophotonics who can make significant contributions to the design, development and implementation of the Virtual Tissue Simulator (VTS) computational platform under development within the VPTI. Specifically, we are looking for researchers with experience in computational methods for modeling and simulation of radiative transport processes in biological systems. The scholar will interact closely with the VPTI team and will play an active role in applying analytic, deterministic and/or stochastic methods to problems involving optical diagnostics, therapeutics and/or imaging. Moreover, as the VPTI seeks to translate these tools for broad use in the biomedical research community using VTS, researchers with experience in object-oriented programming, parallel computing and/or the design of graphical user interfaces would be particularly attractive. Good organization, oral and written communication skills, and the ability to work constructively in a team setting are essential. The candidate will have access to resources at the Laser Microbeam and Medical Program, a NIH-funded National Biotechnology Resource housed within the Beckman Laser Institute, which is active in the development of a broad variety of optical technologies for biomedical application. This position provides a unique opportunity to gain experience in a multidisciplinary environment and any background in biomedical optics/biophotonics is valuable. Salary will be based on the specific skill set of the candidate and previous experience. The initial appointment will be for a one-year period, with possibility of extension.

Candidates should hold a doctoral degree in biomedical engineering, medical physics, applied mathematics or equivalent. The specific salary will depend on the level of experience and previous track record. Screening of applicants will begin immediately and will continue until the position is filled.

To be considered for the position, applicants should send a curriculum vitae and names/addresses of at least three references to:
